Health Interview
What has your personal experience of COVID 19 been?
As a doctor working in the NHS, it has been an extremely difficult time for our entire team. We have had to make several changes within a short time frame in our working pattern. Due to redeployment, the majority of the NHS staff have been working on unique rotas and within unfamiliar work situations. It has been overwhelming to see the increased admission rate and heart-breaking to learn about the death rates within different NHS Trusts.
What is your opinion on the handling of the pandemic?
From the medical viewpoint, the NHS has done an amazing task of working as a team and adapting and rising to the challenge. The flexibility and courage shown has been inspiring. The Government strategies have been confusing at various levels. A useful realisation by the Government has been the importance of NHS as a central and vital part of our society and improvement of the funding to medical services shall be hugely beneficial.
Due you find the spread of variants worrying?
Having knowledge of infectious diseases, emergence of variants always poses fears. As we fight the flu challenge every winter, having the additional burden posed by COVID is saddening. Emergence of variants like the Indian variant, Brazil and South African variants which are spreading rapidly poses huge challenges especially as it is affecting younger age population. Vaccine protection is only hope with ongoing personal hygiene measures.
Do you think any other measures could further reduce the
spread of the virus?
Each individual has responsibility for the safety and protection from spread of viruses. Specific to coronavirus, being a respiratory virus, and spread through air-borne particles; widely known measures should be followed. These are good social distancing, ensuring good ventilation, wearing mask, using tissue when coughing or sneezing. Additionally, ensuring avoidance of smoking and good oronasal hygiene to prevent lodgement of the particles in the respiratory tract is important.
